Chorus
St Alban, we think of you tonight
St Alban, we think of you tonight
St Alban was a martyr in those far off Roman days
He exchanged clothes with a wanted priest to let him get away
He could have saved himself but took the worst that that they could give
He stood his ground and paid the price and died for his belief
He told the Roman governor that his pagan days were through
Defied the whip and faced the sword, to Christ he would be true
Not knowing of the legacy his faith would leave behind
So bravely met his end his executioner fell blind
Chorus
Each time I pass the cathedral that now bears St Alban’s name
I think of all it stands for, all the glory and the pain
And sitting in the garden by the great cathedral walls
I imagine that I hear the echo of St Alban’s call
When I think about St Alban there’s so much I’ll never know
And I wonder at the power of that priest that changed him so
From pagan gods to Christian faith, the message in his word
Was stronger than the fear of death, more powerful than the sword
Chorus
St Albans is the city that I’m proud to call my home
Forgotten are the cruelties of the emperors of Rome
Their mighty power has crumbled now and all that’s left behind
Are the ruins of Verulanium and St Albans holy shrine
And in the bustling market through the street noise I can hear
The bells of the cathedral ringing out so strong and clear
And from the highest tower flies his flag that seems to say
St Alban lives forever, he will never fade away
