Chorus
There’s no escape the daily grind
In field or factory or mine
So as we work we’ll join in song
To raise our spirits all day long
And when the boss comes walking through
We’ll sing in praise of all we do
But when the boss is safely gone
We’ll sing our just complaining song
For life is hard and work we must
To keep our homes and earn a crust
While others live a life of ease
And rest or play just as they please
Chorus
And every soldier knows a song
To keep time as they march along
And sailors work in rhythm too
The shanty man will call the tune
But pity those who quietly work
The seamstress and the office clerk
For after every silent day
They trudge home weary, sad and grey
Chorus
Though work and toil may be our lot
And without jobs we’d surely rot
We’ll have our work song to console
And bring us cheer both young and old
And when our working day is done
We’ll drink strong ale and have our fun
There’s one more song we love to sing
Is raise your glass and drink drink drink
Chorus
