It was love at first sight as she saw him walk in
With a bunch of red roses, a wave and a grin
And her eyes opened wide as he came straight to her
Kissed her forehead and sat by her bed on the chair
There was something familiar though she couldn’t say
If she’d seen him before or just dreamt him some way
So they talked for a while till he got up to leave
Saying look at the time let me bring you some tea
Chorus
And where are her memories of yesterday
Like roses in winter they faded away
The memories they shared for so many years
Like withering flowers they just disappeared
It was love at first sight as he came through the door
With a tray that was laden with tea cake and more
As he sat next to her so her heart skipped a beat
Saying here we are Mary, your favourite treat
And he talked as if they had been married for years
She was puzzled at first but just smiled ear to ear
Till he looked at his watch and took time to explain
When he’d spoken to matron he’d see her again
Chorus
It was love at first sight as she saw him walk by
Take his hat and his coat from the chair by her side
And she wanted to talk to him make him her friend
He just joked about good things all having to end
So she gave him a hug though they’d only just met
While something inside made her restless and fret
As her husband of thirty five years turned away
Leaving Mary her roses till visiting day
And where are her memories of yesterday
Like roses in winter they faded away
The memories they shared for so many years
Like withering flowers they just disappeared
Like withering flowers they just disappeared
