Autumn comes while winter waits
Summer's going but hesitates
Autumn shakes her golden hair
With misty breath she chills the air
As autumn sings her brief lament
Another year will soon be spent
Fill the barn and close the door
Label jars of winter store
Berries ripen apples fall
We'll save the best the rest will spoil
As autumn sings her brief lament
Another year will soon be spent
Noisy geese in circles fly
Once more around and then goodbye
Squirrels chase and hedgehogs hide
Light the lamp and bank the fire
As autumn sings her brief lament
Another year will soon be spent
Gone the swallow, swift and all
Gone the cuckoo's distant call
Still the thrush and robin sing
Through rain and snow they'll wait for spring
As autumn sings her brief lament
Another year will soon be spent
And winter's come where autumn went
